Meena Saifullah Baig, a 15-year-old girl diagnosed with leg length discrepancy and calf muscle tightness, underwent gastrocnemius recession surgery in 2020. When Meena first visited the Hope for Life Foundation (HLF) physio department, she was completely dependent on others for walking and standing.Initially, Meena required assistance with locomotion, stairs, and even accessing the washroom. However, she demonstrated a good understanding of instructions and was able to follow them accurately. Meena was independent with feeding herself but needed assistance to reach the dining area.
Through a tailored therapy plan, Meena progressed significantly over six months. Initially, she received two sessions per week, with home plans focusing on therapeutic exercises for four weeks. As she progressed, new exercise regimens were introduced, and assessments were conducted monthly.
Meena’s hard work and determination paid off, and she transitioned to a functional level. With supervision, she learned to walk with a walker, gradually decreasing her dependence on assistance.
Today, Meena confidently walks with her walker under supervision, both at daycare and home. Her home plans continue to focus on walker activities, promoting further progress.
Meena’s journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience and determination. As she continues to explore the world on her own two feet, her story inspires us to “stop thinking in terms of limitations and start thinking in terms of possibilities.”
